Prepare the things you need including soft bristled brush, broom, clean cloth, mild dish detergent, sponge and towels.

Get rid of dust by using a clean cloth to wipe the walls. To remove stubborn dirt and cobwebs, you can make use of a soft bristled brush. You can also make use of a broom to clean the top area of the wall all the way down. Tape the brush to an extendable light bulb changer tool to reach the tops of the walls.

Prepare your cleaning solution by adding one teaspoon of mild liquid soap to a one gallon of warm water.

Fill another bucket with cool water for later use.
Line the bottom of the painted wall with rags so you will not have a messy floor once you start cleaning the wall with your water solution.

With a sponge, apply your cleaning solution from the top down. Work in small areas or in sections. If you start at the bottom, the dirty water from cleaning the top of the wall runs down the wall leaving streaks in the clean part.

After cleaning one section, rinse it with cool water from the second bucket then wipe clean with a fresh cloth.
Squeeze out excess water and continue working on section from top to bottom.

Using a clean towel, dry the section you just cleaned. Wipe the wall in a downward motion starting from the top. After drying a section of the wall, go on with the next and repeat the procedure until you clean the entire painted wall.

Replace towels once they get all soaked up.

For grease and hard to remove stains, you can always buy commercial products for cleaning walls. Make sure that you do not use abrasive solutions on your wall as it can damage painted surfaces. Avoid scrubbing to protect your wall from accidental chipping.

Spring is here. The weather is getting warmer so it’s time to start gardening. Whether you’re starting your landscape from scratch or just adding a few new plants, trees and bushes, there are a few tricks for how to grow a lush landscape

Plant trees and shrubs first. Evergreen shrubs and trees form the skeleton of the garden. These plants provide interest in the garden even if everything else is resting.

Flowers to the Rescue
It can take two or three years for perennials to start blooming profusely. Fill in with annual flowers.

Seasonal
Plan for four seasons of color, bloom, and interest in the garden. Your landscape will always look lush.

Location
Sun-loving plants need to be in a sunny spot while shade-loving plants have to be in the shade.

Water
Water just enough. Too much and not only do you waste water you might drown the plant.

Weed and Feed
Weeds take water and nutrients from plant you want in the garden.

When you think of log cabins you probably think of roughing it out in the wilderness. But think again. Log cabins come in a range of sizes and amenities from one room to 3,000 square feet with top of the line kitchen appliances, whirlpool in the master bedroom and everything in between.

When decorating a log cabin you don’t have to stick with animal head trophies, plaid upholstery and leather furniture. The only theme that probably wouldn’t work would be ultra modern minimalist. Although if you finished the inside walls with sheet rock and paint, rather than leaving it as wood, you could probably even do that.

Modern-day log cabins come in kits, pre-built manufactured or are custom-built. Site built, in most cases is more expensive that manufactured. Check the building codes of the area you’re considering for restrictions on size. Also keep in mind, you may have to dig a well for water and add a septic tank because there aren’t sewer lines.

Whether you’re considering a home away from home up in the mountains or by a lake or making the dwelling your full time residence a log cabin fits the bill.

For example, a country cottage look with hand-crocheted throw rugs, floral prints on the furniture and well-worn tables would look out of place in a high-rise apartment or inside a sleek sophisticated style house with lots of glass and geometric lines.

Contemporary Furniture fills the bill for a sleek look. That doesn’t mean the feel has to be cold or off-putting. Choose warm fabrics in textured patterns for a Modern Sofa Use throw pillows, shawls and even faux fur to soften the look.

Play with accessories but keep them to a minimum for a clean look. Don’t think that every piece of furniture has to be modern. Contrast the modern look with a wood bench, a child’s toy box as an end table or an antique chandelier. This keeps the room from looking too matched, as if you bought the entire living suite straight from the showroom floor.

It used to be that modern decor was monochromatic, meaning that everything was in shades of one color. Black, brown, whites and creams were favorites of interior designers. That look is happily in the past. These days, pops of bright colors add pizazz. Try red with black, turquoise with brown, or orange with whites.

Don’t forget to add a bouquet of flowers to the entry way table as a welcoming gesture. Orchids, roses and peonies go well with modern furniture. Sunflowers with their big round happy faces will bring a smile to your guests.

During the dead of winter you might only be worried about keeping the furnace going. While the northern hemisphere is freezing the southern hemisphere is experiencing summer. Summer means hot, humid, nights when the sweat just soaks the sheets and sleep is out of the question. Days are blistering and even the breezes seems to raise the temperature instead of bringing it down. Australia’s outback is dusty and so are its residents.

You can drink ice cold lemonade, eat spicy dishes to cool you down and turn on a fan, but the only real solution is air conditioning. A fan circulates the air. That air evaporates the sweat on your skin. The evaporation makes the air next to your skin drop a few degrees.

The problem is if it’s humid, the rate of evaporation slows down and a breeze or fan doesn’t cool you off. High powered fans, portable fans and ceiling fans work well in the shoulder seasons when it’s not too hot or humid. That works in desert climates like the Sonoran desert in Arizona and parts of Australia.

An air conditioner not only cools the temperature of the air but also removes moisture. You might think you have to spend a fortune on air conditioning but that’s not true. cheap air conditioners are available.

Select one that fits the size of the area you want to cool. An air conditioner with a cooling capacity smaller than the size of your room won’t cool the room down enough and has to work overtime. It will stay on too long. An air conditioner that’s too large will keep cycling on and off too much wearing down the motor.

Air conditioning can take the sting out of summer in any hemisphere.

Those who live near rivers and beaches know how raging flood waters destroy everything in its path. One of the most damaging recent events was the flooding in New Orleans from hurricane Katrina. Residences were underwater for weeks at a time. Clean up and repair was a massive undertaking.

Even just a few inches of water can ruin carpets and furniture. Wood, fabric, cloth and paper have a characteristic called wicking. What this means is that fabric with just the ends in the water continues to draw up water until the entire fabric is soaked, not just the part touching the water. Water damage services not only get rid of the water but can treat the area to prevent further damage.

Water damage occurs to areas not immediately apparent. For example, sheetrock, also called gypsum board, absorbs water which weakens the walls but you might not notice that the sheetrock is wet because it’s behind a finished surface.

Water damage on the roof from rainstorms could lead to the ceiling collapsing for the same reason.

After flooding, whether from bad weather, a river overflowing its banks or a pipe breaking in the house, inspect the residence for any damage. Get bids from several companies that provide water damage services. Start the repairs as soon as possible to avoid further damage.

It doesn’t seem to matter how big your home is, or how organized you are, space seems to be constantly dwindling. Even the best organizers say that, particularly for a growing family, eventually you just run out of space. For those that have a difficult time maintaining a good amount of space for your home there are a few things that you can do that can help. One of the biggest solutions that you can find is to add in bunk beds.

Although we often associate bunk beds with activities like summer camp, spending the summer with family, or other temporary situations, when it comes to the bed rooms in your home there is no greater way to free up a lot of space. What may surprise you is that not only does this give you more room, but there are also accessories that can be added to the bunk beds to give them many more useful options.

For example, you might not have known that you can actually find attachments that will give your bunk beds shelving or drawer options. In addition to these, you can also get accessory additions that include remarkable pieces such as a desk, for those who really want to maximize their space.

Even though these aspects are great by themselves, you can also do even more with just bunk beds on their own. For example you can rearrange the way many of these useful beds are assembled to fit how you need them to in the space you are using. This means there are some that can be extended in unusual ways so that they can go over existing furniture or run in the corners of the walls. In addition to this, bunk beds can also typically be easily taken apart to form two separate beds in case you need to have people sleeping in different locations.

Maximizing your space can be simple when using something as versatile as bunk beds. Not only are they useful, but they have become quite comfortable as well.

Before you clean your cement, the first thing that you need to do is to get the area clear of furniture or other things that can be in the way of your cleaning. Using a broom, clean the floor by sweeping the concrete to remove dust and debris. To protect plans and other furniture when cleaning cement, make sure to cover them with tarp or something that cleaning solutions cannot penetrate. Make sure to cover electricity outlet and cords too.

To create your own cement cleaner, mix 5 gallon of water with oxygen bleach. Put it in a bucket then pour it on a tank sprayer. Spray the solution all over the concrete, making sure that you cover each area. Spray enough cleaning solution making sure they won’t dry out easily. After you spray on all area, wait for about 20 minutes and allow the cleaning solution to do its thing.

After you let the oxygen bleach and water solution to sit on the floor for a couple minutes, you then need to scrub it with a long brush. Scrub all areas including the small corners and make sure to sweep off small dirt and debris.

The next thing you need to do is scrub, scrub, scrub! You can u way to do this is either a brush with a long handle or a push broom. Make sure, if you’re in the garage, to get the corners really well. Debris and grime have a tendency to build up there.

To completely clean concrete, it will be good to have a pressure washer. If you do not have it, you can rent one or borrow from someone you know. Adjust the nozzle and use its fan function to sweep the floor.

Waterfalls look lovely in the garden catching the sunlight as the water tumbles over the rocks. The sound of splashing water soothes the spirit and calms the soul. Bring those feelings inside with a standing indoor waterfall. Build a smaller waterfall for a tabletop display for practice before you tackle a larger water feature. The techniques and materials are relatively the same. Whether large or small, the waterfall will become a decorative accessory for the room.

Plastic acrylic sheet, 1/2-inch thick, 24-inches-by18-inches
Waterproof adhesive spray
Glass tiles enough to cover the acrylic
Clear flexible tubing
Nail
Lighter
Acrylic plate display stand
Watertight tray
Waterfall pump
Glass pebbles

Use a smaller piece of acrylic for your first waterfall. A small waterfall of no more than 24 inches high and 18 inches wide is versatile and won’t be as difficult to move as a large one.

Lay the acrylic flat in a well-ventilated area. Spray a small area with waterproof adhesive. Lay the colored glass tiles on the adhesive as closely together as possible. Continue spraying the adhesive and laying the glass tiles until the acrylic sheet is entirely covered.

Lay the acrylic flat in a well-ventilated area. Spray a small area with waterproof adhesive. Lay the colored glass tiles on the adhesive as closely together as possible. Continue spraying the adhesive and laying the glass tiles until the acrylic sheet is entirely covered.

Puncture the tubing at the top of the sheet every few inches with a nail heated with a lighter. The water will spill out the holes and down the sheet. Plug the end of the tube with a clear waterproof sealant.

Place the glass tile-covered sheet into a sturdy plate holder, the kind used to show off collectible dinner plates. Put the sheet and plate holder into a waterproof tray. The basin needs to be deep enough for the pump to be completely submerged. The plate holder will hold the tile-covered sheet at a slight angle backwards so the water flows down the front.

Cover the bottom of the tray with a few inches of glass pebbles.

Use thicker acrylic sheets for larger waterfalls. Construct a stand for the larger sheets from copper tubing you solder together

Don’t cut the acrylic sheet yourself unless you have the proper saw. It melts easily under heat.

Turning a twin bed into a daybed is as simple as turning the bed so it sits lengthwise against the wall rather than jutting out into the room. If you have a spare full headboard use that in back of the twin bed — rather than as a headboard — to add focus to the bed.

Remove the headboard from the bed frame. Exactly how you do this depends on the headboard and bed frame. The frame may be metal and the headboard wood or fabric. It most cases you’ll probably be able to do it with a screwdriver. Do not dismantle the headboard into pieces. Keep it whole and detach it from the bed frame.

Locate the twin bed in its permanent position in the room against the wall. It will go lengthwise against the wall. Mark the wall at each end of the bed.

Center the headboard in between the marks. Twin beds are 75 inches long. Full beds and headboards are 54 inches wide. There will be a gap of 10 1/2 inches on either side of the headboard. Push the twin bed up against the headboard. You may not need to extend the headboard to cover the full length of the twin bed, if you put toss pillows across the back of the bed and headboard. If it looks odd or unfinished, add to the headboard so it goes the full length of the bed.

Extend the headboard 11 inches on each side, the additional half inch won’t be noticeable. Use fabric that goes with the headboard if it’s fabric. Wrap a piece of balsa wood that’s 10 1/2 to 11 inches wide and as long as the headboard is tall, with batting. Secure on the back of the scrap wood with upholstery tacks you nail in. Cover the batting with fabric. Secure with upholstery tacks.

Use wood, if the headboard is wood. Stain it to match the headboard. Match the style of the headboard by adding decorative wood molding. Glue the molding to the wood before staining.

Attach the headboard to the wall behind the twin daybed with brackets at the bottom about 6 inches off the floor and about 24 inches off the floor. the brackets should not be visible above the twin bed mattress so you may have to adjust a few inches shorter than 24 inches.

Attach the fabric panels to the wall with double-stick tape. Balsa wood is light and shouldn’t require much more for support.

Attach wood by screwing the panels into the wall 6 inches and 24 inches from the floor.

Wood beams, flooring, or paneling provides a rustic look to walls. Find the wood in salvage yards, construction sites and from remodeling sites. Of course ask permission before removing anything from someone else’s property, even if it looks like it’s been thrown in the garbage. Wood fencing and old picket fences are two more options.

Metal
Metal is an unusual covering for walls. Rusty shed panels give a country look to a kitchen. Used copper sheeting ages to a turquoise patina. Save your empty soda pop and beer cans. Remove the tops and bottoms. Spread flat and either glue or nail to the wall. Use the inside of the can for a consistent color or the outside for a rumpus or family room.

Stone
A brick wall looks cozy in a kitchen. A river rock wall brings the outdoors in. The trick is attaching the stone to the wall. River rocks have to be small and set in thin set. Stone tiles are another option. Find the rocks in the wild, from people renovating their homes.

Warning
Keep in mind that the wall has to be sturdy enough to support the wall sheathing. Stones and tiles may be too heavy for a material such as sheet rock, but work fine on plywood. Wood may be riddled with termites, mold or other insects such as scorpions. Treat the wood with a pesticide before installing.

Gazing out your balcony to a cityscape glowing in the evening, or looking over a lake from your home in the country, provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, there are times when screens are required to provide some shade from the hot afternoon sun, to break the wind or to provide privacy. Bamboo shades are lightweight and roll up out of the way when not needed. They attach quickly to an apartment balcony.

What You’ll Need
Wood strip, 1-by-1 and 6-feet long
Bamboo shades 6-feet wide
Staple gun
Masonry drill bit 3/16-inch diameter
Wood drill bit 1/4-inch diameter
Electric drill
1/4-inch concrete/masonry screws at least 2-1/2 inches long
Twine

Staple the 1-by-1 wood strip to the top of the bamboo shade every six inches. This gives it extra stability when the wind blows. Be careful not to interfere with the shade mechanism that allows the shade to be lowered and raised.

Drill three holes two feet apart and in a straight line in the bottom of the balcony over yours. Use a masonry 3/16-inch drill bit. The holes should be one inch back from the edge of the balcony. The diameter should be the same as the concrete screws. The hole should be slightly more than 1-1/2 inches long.

Mark the wood strip every two feet. The marks should line up with the drilled holes in the balcony. Drill holes at the marks with 1/4-inch drill bit.

Hold the wood strip with the bamboo shading attached against the bottom of the balcony. Line up the holes.

Thread the concrete screws through the wood and into the concrete. The concrete screws have a finish which help grab into the concrete.

Lower the bamboo shade. Tie the bottom of the shade to the balcony railing with twine every 12 inches. This stops it from flapping in the wind. Use a natural color twine and it won’t be noticeable.

If you want the screen to be more permanent, frame it with strips of wood and then attach the frame to the bottom of the ceiling of the balcony above you and also to the top of the railing of your balcony.

Tips
If you can’t find masonry screws that are 1/4-inch use another size. Be sure that the masonry drill is slightly smaller than the screw size. Bamboo shades come in different sizes. Use the size appropriate for your balcony. Wear goggles when drilling either the wood or concrete.

Courtyards provide a breath of fresh air and glimpse of greenery from the interior of the house. However, sometimes a growing family needs the additional square footage of an enclosed courtyard to relieve cramped living spaces. The size and location of your courtyard will have a major impact on the renovation. If the courtyard has a partial roof and sturdy flooring you’re ahead of the project.

Wash the exterior walls of the house surrounding the courtyard. Use a power wash if they’re especially dirty.

Install flooring if the courtyard has a dirt floor. Remove dirt from the dirt flooring of the courtyard so it is at least 8 inches below the entrances from the rooms around it. Backfill with 4 inches of gravel. Tamp down the gravel. Pour pre-mixed cement over the gravel to a depth of 4 inches. Level and let cure for up to four days. If you plan on adding tile on top of the cement allow for the space for additional thin set and the tile. Otherwise the room’s flooring may be above that of the surrounding rooms. Or carpet the room after it’s been completely enclosed. Wood flooring is another option.

Sweep the tile floor of the courtyard. Scrub any dirty greasy spots. Rinse and let dry thoroughly. Scrub down concrete flooring. Use a degreaser to remove any grease. Stain the concrete for a more finished look. Choose two different colors. Apply as per package directions.

Finish off the exterior walls of the courtyard so they look like the interior walls. For example, if the interior is plaster walls and the exterior brick, change the brick to plaster. If the finish is similar, paint the walls of the courtyard to match that of the rest of the house.

Install roofing that matches the exterior of the house. Install ceilings underneath the roofing that matches the ceilings of the rooms surrounding the courtyard for a cohesive look.

Consider adding heating and cooling ductwork to the current HVAC system to the room. If you decide to do this, do it before you add the ceiling. The duct work is installed between the roof and the ceiling.

Remove doors and windows that look out of place. For example, an exterior window from a bedroom looking out into another interior room looks odd from both the bedroom side and the other room.

Remove walls for better traffic patterns if need be. Be careful though to not remove load bearing walls.

Finish off the old doorways with arches or wood beams. Board up oddly placed windows with framing, sheetrock, texturizing and paint. Keep in mind that building codes may specify that every room has to have an exterior window. You may have to add windows to compensate for those you remove.

Install new doorways if the courtyard was used at the front entrance of the house.

Take out any plants around the edge of the courtyard and replace with house plants.

When you’re looking to save money in the winter there’s nothing better than trying to figure out the insulation qualities of the outer walls in your home. This is where most of the cold air gets in because it goes through the walls and comes into the outlet of the openings on the inside of your walls. Many people do not realize that heat transfer through the outlets can cost 10% more, if the outer walls are not properly insulated. If your heating bill is $500 per month that’s $50 lost.

In order to fix this problem you are going to have to check the R rating quality of the insulation in your walls. There are a couple of options when you decide to install new insulation in your outer walls.

Changing the installation in the walls can be a long and strenuous process but the result will be one of the best decisions you can make. Improving the R rating of the insulation in your outer walls can save you up to 20% of your total of heating bill through one winter. Over five years that’s thousands of dollars.

The first option you can choose is to have a specialist come in to check the insulation quality of your existing insulation. They will be able to tell you if you need to get new insulation or if the old insulation is good enough. The thing about it is, you are not going to want to spend money if the insulation was newly put in five years ago.

Don’t hire the first specialist who tells you, you need extra installation and he just happens to have some in the truck. Get at least two more bids. Compare the bids to check they’re using the same type of insulation. Include the installation fee in the total cost for the job.

Many older homes have been upgraded by having blown insulation put into the walls. This will increase the R rating value of your home and greatly reduced the amount of drafts that you find coming through the walls and into your home. Blown insulation is very simple to do and will fill any cracks that you might have in the wall letting cold air in.

Replacing the insulation, rather than blowing in new insulation over the old, is a time consuming and disruptive process since the old insulation has to be removed.

There’s nothing worse than finding out that one of your windows or doors in your home is not energy efficient and is letting cold air into the home and the warm air out. This is something that need to be taken care of immediately. Otherwise your heating bills are going to go through the roof. Nobody wants to spend more money than they need to when it comes to heating your house during the winter months so it is best to take care of the problems as you find out.

When you’re looking for energy-saving doors and windows there a couple things that you have to be aware of so that you do not end up purchasing the wrong product or spending more money than you need to.

The first thing that you want to do is ask the sales agent about the quality of the window at what the R rating has on the glass. Glass is not a good insulator and will become cold when exposed to frigid temperatures. Some glass has air pockets, others are double paned. Thicker glass has a higher R rating then thinner glass.

Every glass window, or door, has an R rating value to determine whether or not it is energy efficient. You also have to think of the climate you live in order to make the best decision on the new energy-saving windows and doors because they are rated for different climate areas. Keep this in mind the next time you’re looking to purchase an energy saving window or door so that you can make the best decision possible and save a little bit of money in the process.

The next thing that you have to consider when you are looking to install new energy- saving doors and windows is the size of the existing door or window. They are made in all different sizes and shapes so you have to make sure that they’re going to fit in the location in your home. By doing proper measurements you’ll be able to purchase the window that is going to slide into the opening in your home with minimal alterations made to the window openings.

Doors and windows take exact measurements for a proper fit. You might consider having them professionally installed.

Another thing that you can check out when you’re looking for new windows and doors at our energy efficient is to see if they have a Federal tax rebate. Many of the new doors and windows that meet a certain requirement will give you a Federal tax break because you purchased energy efficient doors and windows and installed them in your home. This can save you even more money when you’re looking to upgrade your house and save some energy during the winter.

Winter is right around the corner and you want to be able to make sure that your house is completely insulated from drafts to save money on your heating bills. Depending on the type of heat you have, you are going to want to make sure every part of your house has some type of insulation in order to keep the heat inside and the cold out. Insulation is also vital in blistering hot summer areas where you want to keep the air conditioned air inside the home.

When you’re ready to insulate your house there are a couple things you need to know to get the best insulation quality and lower your heating bill. Here are just a few tips to help you to purchase the right insulation for your home. Consider that you might even get a tax credit when you insulate your home and lower your Federal bill.

One thing that you have to be well aware of when you’re purchasing insulation is the R rating. The R rating is tells you how effective the insulation is at preventing heat exchange. A lower rating prevents less heat exchange and higher rating prevents more. You can purchase roles of insulation at any home department store or any store that sells home improvement products.

A role of insulation can cost anywhere from $45.00 all way up to $200 depending on the rating and where you are purchasing your insulation from. This does not include installation. Rolls of insulation may be laid in the attic but not appropriate for walls since the walls would have to removed and re-installed. Consider a blown in foam insulation for walls.

Another thing that you can do if you’ll are wondering about the insulation quality of your home is to hire a specialist to check out the R rating. They will also tell you exactly what you need to do, or your best option, to fix the insulation problem right on the spot. Some of these contractors will give you an opportunity for them to fix the insulation problem. Always get more than one bid. The price may vary tremendously for both the cost of the insulation and the installation.

It is possible to rent a blower to have the insulation blown in yourself. You can purchase the insulation that you need and rent the blower to do all the insulating of your home yourself.

Check your insulation before winter sets in to protect your house from the cold.

One thing that is going to raise your heating bill is cold air coming through the doors and windows. A draft is something that will drastically raise your heating bill because it will cause the furnace to constantly stay on in order to keep your house at the temperature you want. In order to make sure that you have no drafts you’re going to have to check all of your doors and windows.

You’ll be able to detect a draft by simply placing your hand along the window or door frame to see if you can feel any air passing through when it is shut. If you happen to feel a draft in any location around the doors or windows you’re going to have to fix the problem. Here are a couple of suggestions that might help you fix the problems so that you don’t spend more on your heating bill then you need to during the winter.

One thing that you can purchase that will help eliminate the draft around doors and windows is weather stripping. Weather stripping is fairly inexpensive and you’ll be able to purchase it at any home department store that sells doors and windows. You also want to make sure that your doors and windows will still close after you install the weather stripping. If the windows and doors to not shut and you might have to look for a skinnier weather stripping to install in the gap to make sure that you still have a tight fit so no draft enters.

The weather stripping is good to have on the inside of the windows but you also have to consider the outside as well. You do not want heat to escape to the outside either so you’re going to have to check the outside of the windows to make sure that there are no drafts leaving the home. The nice thing about having a draft that is on the outside of the house is that you’ll be able to use caulking to repair the draft. This is another simple and cheap way to eliminate the drafts in your home so that you do not spend a lot on your heating.

You also want to check to see if there’s any draft’s coming through the walls where outlets and light switches are. This is one of the leading causes of heat loss and any home that most people do not know about. Seal the drafts with silicon caulking.

This seems to be the question of all carpet owners. First thing to do is to ask yourself- what type of carpet stain do you want to get rid of? You should treat each carpet stain differently. A water stain is more easily cleaned than a paint stain. Hot water will remove some stains such as grease and set others such as blood. You should use a different technique in cleaning animal stains too. But whatever type of stain your carpet has, stick to this one tip- do not scrub your carpet! It can do you more harm than good. Scrubbing pushes the stain into the carpet fibers.

Coffee/ Juice/ Tea stain
Here are several ways to treat a coffee, juice or tea stain. They also work for wine and cola. If one method doesn’t work try another. Let the area of the carpet dry between cleanings or you might end up soaking the carpet pad. That could lead to mildew. Blot the stain as soon as you see it. Use paper towels or a white cloth. Push the towel into the stain, bring the cloth back up and then push it into the stain again. Sprinkle drops of tonic water or soda on the stain, blot dry with a paper towel. Put plain water on the stain then dry it again with a paper towel. Use your dish washing liquid and add it to water. A good ratio is one teaspoon of liquid to one quart of water. Put 3% hydrogen peroxide on the stain. Cover with paper towels. Put a heavy weight on the towels. Let it sit for about four hours. Remove the weights and towel. Allow to dry for a day. Reapply if necessary.

Wax stain
Scrape the wax off as much as possible. Cover the stain with brown paper. With a warm iron, press on the stain making sure it is not too hot to burn the carpet. Iron the stain until the wax transfers from the carpet onto the brown paper. Use fresh brown paper when necessary. This will probably require several applications.

Urine/ Feces/ Animal Stain
Remove any solid waste. Blot the stain and apply the water-dish washing liquid solution as mentioned above using a wet cotton cloth. Blot the excess liquid up as much as possible. Apply a solution of one part household ammonia and one part water on the stain or use a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water. Blot with paper towels. Repeat as necessary. If the pet returns and resoils the area use a commercial product made to remove pet stains. It also removes the odor of the urine.

When fall gardening, make sure and pick the vegetables with the shortest growing season so they can be full grown and harvested before the frost arrives. Most seed packages will be labeled “early season”, or you can find the seeds boasting the fewest days to maturity. You may want to go after your seeds for fall gardening in spring or early summer; they are usually not kept in stock towards the end of summer. If they are stored in a cool and dry location they will keep until you are ready to plant.

In order to know exactly when the best time to start fall gardening, you must know about when the first hard frost will hit your area. One of the best ways to tell this is by a Farmer’s Almanac. They will give you exact dates and are rarely wrong. You will also need to know exactly how long it is going to take your plants to mature.

To get your soil ready for fall gardening you must first remove any leftover spring/summer crops and weeds. Crops leftover from the last season can end up spreading bacteria and disease if left in the garden. Spread a couple of inches of compost or mulch over the garden area to increase the nutrients, however, if spring plants were fertilized heavily it may not need much, if any. Till the top layer of soil, wet it down, and let it set for about 12-24 hours. Once this has been done, you are ready to start planting.

Many gardeners will run from fall gardening so they don’t have to deal with frosts, but if tough, sturdy vegetables are planted they can withstand a few frosts and give you some wonderful tasting produce. Fall gardening gives you the chance to enjoy your vegetable garden for at least a little bit more time.

What you choose to grow during you fall gardening will depend on your available space and what you like to eat, just like spring plants. Even the crops that enjoy the heat, such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes, okra, and peppers, will produce until frosts hit, which can be pretty late in the year in southern areas. However, there are some plants that will quit towards the end of summer like snap-beans, summer squash, and cucumbers. If these vegetables are planted around the middle of the summer they can be harvested until the first frosts as well. Hardy, tough vegetables will grow until the temperature is as low as 20 degrees, but those that aren’t as strong will only be able to grow through light frosts. Remember that if you have root and tuber plants and the tops are killed by a freeze the edible part can be saved if a large amount of mulch is used.

You won’t have to worry about any problems before winner ssets in.

Many furnaces have a filter in the door, on the side or in the back that allows cold air to go into the furnace. That cold air is then heated. If this filter is plugged it will cause the furnace not to burn properly or heat your house. This inefficiency means you use more fuel in order to get your house warm. Simply by changing the filter you will allow a constant supply of air to go into the furnace so that the fuel burns properly. This will allow your furnace to run more efficient and not use more gas that it needs to. Purchase these filters at any home department store such as Wal-Mart or Home Depot or a hardware store. They are fairly inexpensive and you can change them yourself. Change them at least once a month.

Another thing that you want to check is to see if your igniting mechanism is working properly. If you got an igniting pilot, it has to light every time otherwise you could have gas entering your home. Not a good thing. You do not want this in your home because it could lead to many health concerns such as carbon dioxide. If you do not know how to check the ignition system of your furnace, call a technician to come out and check to see if it is working properly. Many run specials in early fall to give your furnace a thorough check up.

You also want to check the exhaust to make sure there are no leaks in the pipe leading out of the home. You also want to check to make sure that the exhaust pipe is not clogged with soot because that will allow carbon dioxide or other harmful gases back into the home.

Take a few precautions to get your furnace ready for winter and you’ll stay toasty warm until spring.

Why Won’t the Ceiling Fan Turn on With a Wall Switch?

Ceiling fans bring a breath of coolness to the room. While they don’t lower the temperature in a room, like an air conditioner, they make you feel cooler because of the air movement. If you feel cooler you can turn up the thermostat on the air conditioner and cut down on your cooling bills. If your fan is balky and turning on with the wall switch there may be several reasons.

Lack of Electricity
Ceiling fans run by electricity. If the electricity isn’t getting to the fan motor, it won’t turn with the wall switch. The switch may be wired improperly or turned off by another wall switch. If that’s the case, sometimes both switches have to be turned to the on position. The fan may not be properly wired to the electrical source. The breaker that controls the fan may be turned off or the breaker may switch off because the fan isn’t wired properly. The breaker may have remained in the off position when the fan was installed.

Faulty Motor
If the fan’s motor is faulty or has burned out, it won’t turn on when the wall switch is switched on. Usually the motor will start then stop, if its’ burned out. Sometimes there will be a puff of smoke or an acrid smell when it burns out. If the fan won’t turn on after installation and you’ve know the switch is fine and electricity is reaching the motor, then the motor itself could be faulty.

Switch is Broken
Switches wear out or may not be making contact with the electrical wires to turn on the fan.

Fan is Turned off at the Fan’s Switch
Ceiling fans have switches to change the rotation of the blades. One way draws air down from the ceiling. The other way draws air up from the floor. If the switch is in the off position on the fan itself, it won’t turn on at the wall switch.

Wrong Model
Not every model of ceiling fans can be controlled by a wall switch. Some will only work with the pull chain or switch on the fan itself.

Warning
Electricity is dangerous, if you don’t know what you’re doing. Unless you’re an expert and have significant experience with wiring don’t attempt to troubleshoot the fan yourself. Wires are color coded. Attaching the wrong wires to each other or leaving them bare could result in a fire hazard. Always turn off the electricity at the breaker when investigating. Don’t rely on the fan’s switch or the wall switch to turn off the electricity to the fan.
